Fields of Athenry 10k 2024

St. Stephen’s Day 2024 dawned bright and crisp in Athenry, providing excellent conditions for running and setting the scene for another memorable edition of the race. From early morning, runners and spectators alike gathered around the town, with a real sense of anticipation building as athletes assembled at the start line opposite the train station to take on the familiar one-loop course.

Once underway, the pace at the front was fast and competitive. It was Craughwell AC’s Jamie Fallon who emerged victorious, leading the field home in a superb 30:34. Close behind him were Castlegar AC clubmates Aimad Belayd, who finished second in 30:54, and Abaas Adam Edris, who claimed third place in 31:10, making it a strong showing for the Galway club.

The women’s race was equally impressive, with Sharon Rynne of Leevale AC taking first place in a time of 35:53. She was followed by Evelyn Coughlan of Tullamore Harriers AC, who crossed the line in 36:01, with Catherine Thornton of Galway City Harriers rounding out the podium in 36:13.

Throughout the course, runners were supported by enthusiastic volunteers and spectators, creating a warm and encouraging atmosphere despite the winter chill. The marshals ensured each junction was safely managed, while supporters lined the route to cheer athletes through the closing kilometres back into the town.

The sage green race hat proved a big hit with participants and quickly became a popular addition to the growing collection of St. Stephen’s Day souvenirs. 2024 also marked the introduction of the Corporate Cup, which added an exciting new element to the event. The inaugural trophy was claimed by a team of four men from SmartBear Software, proud sponsors of the Castle Group Corporate Cup.

The race was expertly led by Race Director Maeve Noone, whose dedication and organisation ensured a smooth and successful event. A sincere thank you goes to our main sponsor, along with all volunteers, sponsors, supporters and athletes who contributed to another fantastic St. Stephen’s Day in Athenry.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back again next year.
